The DNA of the 25th President of the USA

William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, is a figure often overshadowed by other titanic presidents of his era. Yet he played a crucial role in a watershed moment in American history, when the country went from an isolated state to an emerging world power.

Born on January 29, 1843, in Niles, Ohio, McKinley came from humble beginnings. His father, William McKinley Sr, was an ironworks operator, and his mother, Nancy Allison McKinley, emphasized morality and religion, which certainly influenced McKinley's own deeply held beliefs. As a young man, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, attaining the rank of major, which later earned him the nickname "Major McKinley."

After the war, McKinley studied law and began a successful law practice before entering politics. An ardent supporter of the protective tariff, he quickly became a leading member of the Republican Party.

In 1871, McKinley married Ida Saxton, the daughter of a wealthy banker from Canton, Ohio. The couple had two daughters, but both died in infancy. These tragedies, combined with Ida's own poor health, shaped McKinley's personal life and character.

As president, elected in 1896 and reelected in 1900, McKinley took office at a time of economic upheaval and imperialist drive. His administration was responsible for the annexation of Hawaii, victory in the Spanish-American War, and the subsequent acquisition of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

McKinley's presidency came to an abrupt end, however, when he was shot by an anarchist assassin in 1901. His death led to the appointment of the charismatic Theodore Roosevelt as president and marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new one in American politics.

William McKinley may not be as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his presidency and legacy are closely tied to America's transformation from a rural country to an industrial superpower.

William McKinley belonged to haplogroup R-M343 (subgroup R-S764) in the paternal line.
