The DNA of a former French emperor

Napoleon III was a major political leader in the 19th century and reigned as the last monarch over France. He was born on April 20, 1808, and his real name was Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. His uncle was none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, the famous French general and emperor.

Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, who later took the name Napoleon III, came from the Bonaparte dynasty, an Italo-French family founded by Carlo Buonaparte and his wife Letizia Ramolino. Napoleon III was the third son of Louis Bonaparte, the younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, and Hortense de Beauharnais, the daughter of Napoleon's first wife Joséphine.

Because of his heritage and close ties to the earlier Napoleonic dynasty, Napoleon III was under constant scrutiny and had to endure several exiles and prison terms before coming to power. After two failed coup attempts in 1836 and 1840, Napoleon III came to power through a successful coup in 1851, a year after he was elected president of the French Republic.

Napoleon III ruled France from 1852 to 1870, proclaiming the Second Empire and himself emperor. He was known for his aggressive foreign policy ambitions, which often brought him into conflict with other European powers. However, despite his controversies and defeats, especially in the Franco-Prussian War, he also brought France some progress. Under his rule, Paris was modernized, new railroads were built, banks were supported, and the economy as a whole was strengthened.

On December 2, 1852, he had himself proclaimed emperor and henceforth took the name Napoleon III, a direct link to his uncle's political tradition. In 1870, after defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, he was captured by the Germans and his empire ended.

In exile in England, Napoleon III died on January 9, 1873. Although he was a controversial leader, his reforms and style of rule left a lasting mark on modern France.

Napoleon III belonged to haplogroup I-M170 (subgroup I-CTS6433) in the paternal line.
