The DNA of a former governor

George Brinton McClellan was a Union general who served for the Northern Union during the American Civil War. He was born on December 3, 1826 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died on October 29, 1885 in Orange, New Jersey. The distinguished military leader was also active as a politician, running against Abraham Lincoln as a presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in 1864. McClellan was known for his organizational skills and strategic acumen in the Army. His accomplishments and impact, however, have been judged differently by historians and biographers.

George B. McClellan was of Scotch-Irish descent. The son of Dr. George McClellan, a noted surgeon, and Elizabeth Brinton McClellan, he grew up in a privileged environment. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at age 15 and was accepted at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was an outstanding student and graduated with honors in 1846 at the age of 19.

McClellan began his military service in the Mexican War, where he demonstrated his tactical skills at the Battle of Contreras and Churubusco. After the war, he worked to rebuild the Army and conducted geological reconnaissance in the West. Before the outbreak of the Civil War, McClellan had a brilliant career in the Army and was well liked by his men.

With the onset of the Civil War, McClellan was appointed major general and charged with reorganizing the Union Army. His skills as an organizer were unquestioned and his popularity with the troops unsurpassed. However, McClellan's tactics, which relied on extreme caution to avoid unnecessary casualties, were the subject of controversy. although his strategies were often viewed as cowardly, later historians have argued that his caution helped save the Union from premature defeat.

McClellan ran for U.S. president in 1864 but was defeated by Abraham Lincoln. After his defeat, he retired from politics and devoted himself to business, becoming president of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway in 1877.

Although McClellan's accomplishments in the army and politics are controversial, he remains one of the most prominent figures of the American Civil War. His tactical skills and organizational abilities in the Union Army were unquestioned, and his time in the political arena, though brief, was also significant.

George B. McClellan was a member of haplogroup R-M343 (subgroup R-M222) in the paternal line.
